multilingual music journey
Starting in Labuan, Malaysia, Karen’s career expanded into the wider Mandarin market, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The timeline below highlights major stages in that journey.
Malay-language debut · entering the Mandarin market
Karen began drawing attention with Malay-language releases such as “Cinta Hello Kitty” in late 2006 and released her first Malay album, Mulakan, in 2007. The same year she released the Mandarin album Showtime, extending her career into the Chinese-language music market.[2][3][13]
First online music show
On 17 July 2007, Karen staged the KAREN Unbreakable Spirit Online Music Show, linked to Sunsilk’s “Unbreakable Spirit” campaign. Contemporary promotion positioned it as the first online music show by a Malaysian singer, making Karen an early web-concert pioneer in Malaysia.[2][13][21]
I’m Karen: Taiwan development and a Hong Kong breakthrough
I’m Karen was released in Taiwan in 2009, taking Karen’s Mandarin work to a wider market. That year she also appeared as a challenger on Taiwan’s Super Idol. Late in the year she challenged on Hong Kong TVB’s The Voice, performing 《舔傷》 and scoring more than 90 points. Judge Chiu Tsang Hei subsequently invited her to collaborate, becoming an important turning point in her Hong Kong career.[1][6][7][13][20]
I’m Karen wins AIM17 Best Local Chinese Album
At the 17th Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM), I’m Karen received “Album Cina Tempatan Terbaik” (Best Local Chinese Album), an important recognition for the album in Malaysia.[22]
K RHYTHM · moving toward independent development
After ending her collaboration with Prodigee Media, Karen began using K Rhythm International as a platform for independent music development across Hong Kong and Malaysia. Later official industry material also lists K Rhythm International Limited as her record company.[1][26]
Feature-film debut: Nasi Lemak 2.0
Karen appeared in Namewee’s Malaysian film Nasi Lemak 2.0 as Xiao K, marking the start of her feature-film work. She later appeared in further Malaysian and Hong Kong films; the verified filmography is listed below.[31]
Just Simple Karen Kong · first Cantonese single
On 24 February, Karen returned to Malaysia for the roughly 200-capacity Just Simple Karen Kong concert, which sold out before the show. The same year she released her first Cantonese single, 《做我自己》, formally opening a new phase of her Hong Kong Cantonese career.[23][7][11]
Time Tunnel — Ten Years of a Challenger
On 15 February, Karen held Time Tunnel — Ten Years of a Challenger at Jao Tsung-I Academy in Hong Kong, looking back musically on a decade spanning Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. It was also the first concert she helped organise herself after becoming an independent artist.[24][25]
King Maker III reintroduces her to Hong Kong audiences
With years of professional experience, Karen entered ViuTV’s King Maker III, advanced through the competition and reached the top-30 stage. The programme became an important recent turning point in her Hong Kong visibility.[8][10][11]
Embrace and film songs
On 15 April, Embrace (《等一個擁抱》), Karen’s first film shot in Hong Kong, opened with Karen as the female lead Lau Yan-yuet. 《原來・未忘》 served as the theme song and 《一轉眼》 as an insert song. On 30 May she performed 《一轉眼》 on TVB’s Jade Solid Gold, receiving approval from all 20 audience voters.[14][15][16][17][18][19]
Joins Sky Team Entertainment
On 19 April, Karen officially announced that she had joined Sky Team Entertainment. She said the company offered greater creative freedom, allowing her to spend more time on songwriting and music development.[27]
Metro Radio Hit Awards — Breakthrough Singer
Karen received the “Breakthrough Singer” award at the 2021 Metro Radio Hit Awards, an important recognition during this phase of her Hong Kong music career.[9]
Vocal mentor on Midlife, Sing & Shine! · preparing a Cantonese EP
In a 2024 interview with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Karen said she had recently served as a vocal mentor on TVB’s Midlife, Sing & Shine! and helped one contestant reach the final seven. The same interview noted that she was preparing her first Cantonese EP in Hong Kong.[10]
Light and Radiance
After continuing to release new Cantonese work, Karen held the first Hong Kong Light Cantonese Music Sharing Session on 26 July, centred on the concept EP and her recent creative journey. On 11–12 December she staged three performances of the Radiance Intimate Concert at the Black Box Theatre, Kwai Tsing Theatre.[11][12][28][29]
Independent again · opening her own studio
After her Sky Team Entertainment contract ended at the end of March 2026, Karen opened her own studio, dividing her work between vocal teaching and self-funded music production and releases. The studio’s first single, 《目前無法處理您的請求》, was released the same year.[30]
